New York acclaimed indie/synth-pop band Burnside Project have aired their brand new (and final) single “Ancient Artifact“, alongside a video.
The song is a classic indie dance track which opens with a soaring chorus over a bed of shimmering synths and guitars before launching into a four-on-the-floor beat. It chronicles a child’s struggles with neurodiversity and finding the superpowers buried within.
“Ancient Artifact” takes on a profound significance as it features Burnside Project’s Paul Searing on a powerful lead vocal in the chorus. Tragically, Searing passed away unexpectedly shortly before Christmas of 2023. This marks his final recorded performance, a lasting testament to his talent. His artistic vision is further immortalized on the single cover which features his original photography and design. The remaining members took some time to reflect and decided to the release it as a tribute to his memory.
Speaking about the song the band shared:
“There are a lot of emotions behind the song, as we had reconvened “virtually” last year to record this track built from some abandoned parts from 2003. The plan was to release the single in January and hopefully regroup for some live shows. Paul’s unexpected passing in December would change all that — it’s a terrible loss that we along with his family and close friends are still processing. It is with his family’s blessing that we are releasing “Ancient Artifact.” Indeed, this is a bittersweet tribute, with Paul’s voice kicking off the song and featured prominently in all the choruses.”
Of the video, they added:
“The accompanying video was culled from footage of our sold-out Tokyo show in 2004, an unbelievable night that we are so grateful to have experienced together. With this also being Burnside Project’s final release, we want to say thank you to everyone who’s listened and supported us through the years.“
