Ride guitarist and songwriter Andy Bell has announced the release of his third solo album ‘pinball wanderer’.
To mark the announcement Bell has also dropped the lead single “i’m in love…” feat. Dot Allison and Michael Rother. The 8-track album, recorded with Bell’s Oasis bandmate Gem Archer will be out on February 28 through Sonic Cathedral. Pre-order your copy here.
Commenting on the new single – a cover of The Passions’ post-punk classic “I’m In Love With A German Film Star”, Andy shares:
“I’m so happy I’ve finally managed to get a version of this song out there! The Passions’ original is such a cool piece of ‘proto shoegaze’, as noted many times by Erol Alkan. While he was producing ‘This Is Not A Safe Place’ there was talk of Ride recording a cover of the song, but it never transpired, so I contacted my friend Dot Allison about singing on my own version. I booked her to DJ at a club in Stockholm in the 2000s. I’d been a big fan of One Dove and envisioned her going over well but when she levelled the place at 3am with ‘Ace Of Spades’ by Motörhead I was blown away, and we became mates. It’s fair to say that on this cover she was a perfect fit.
“The other guest is Michael Rother of Neu! One of my musical heroes, and an unbelievable honour to have him playing guitar on this. We had initially wanted him to remix the track, but in the end he said he didn’t have time, but could he play guitar on it – which w as even better, and totally lifted it to new heights.”
