Krautrock/psych/alt super group MIEN have unveiled their new single “Empty Sun” alongside a music video.
The track serves as the second taste from their upcoming album ‘MIIEN‘, due to be released on April 18 via Fuzz Club Records. Pre-order it here.
UPDATE 2/24/2025: “Empty Sun” is our new Single of the Week.
In a landscape where the term ‘psych’ often feels confined and predictable, MIEN, made up of MIEN is Rishi Dhir (bass, guitar, keyboards), Robb Kidd (drums), John Mark Lapham (keyboards/samples/programming) and Alex Maas (vocals/bass/guitar), stands out as a beacon of true sonic exploration.
Their new record captures MIEN’s unique creative process. Most songs began as simple ideas—a loop, a vocal phrase, or a groove—passed between members and meticulously layered. John Mark Lapham, the band’s “musical alchemist,” transformed these sketches into fully realized compositions, adding bold textures and dynamic shifts. Alex Maas’s hauntingly beautiful vocals bring a dark yet alluring dimension to the sound, elevating each track with his distinctive presence.
Commenting on the track, they shared:
“Like many of our songs, “Empty Sun” began as a series of loops paired with a lyric-less vocal demo from Alex. John Mark later reshaped it with distinct sections, samples, and layers of Solina string machine. To lock in the groove, Robb recorded countless drum takes to perfect the complex patterns, while Rishi and Elephant Stone guitarist Robbie added massive, warped guitar textures during the mixing session that brought ‘Empty Sun’ roaring to life.”
