English indie/alt artist Mudi Sama have released his new single “Bad Life”.
The track is out now via Neon Gold Records / Futures. Get it here.
Influenced and inspired by artists such as Bloc Party, Dominic Fike, Radiohead, and The Strokes, Mudi Sama is a British-born, Nigeria-raised artist with a sound steeped in alternative culture. His guitar shreds together with his signature raw, poignant vocals:
“Make it up as I go, Yeah no one knows, In this glass house, Stop throwing stones, Falling out of the sky, Into a clouded life, All these stop signs, All these green lights.”
Commenting on the track, Mudi Sama explains:
“Bad Life is a song about rebellion, living through the chaos and figuring it out yourself – ignoring the outside noise. In a world of one size fits all advice and self help theories on every corner which I’ve been subject to myself with many attempts to “turn my life around in 21 days”. It’s always go left or go right with never much reasoning. I wrote this as a letter to myself to not listen to whatever rules the world has there for what to do with your life. “I’ll make mistakes I’ll do what I like”.
Jamie Rendle (producer and co-writer) & I wanted to explore what it feels like to be in a constant state of flux. Lines like “into the abyss I’m lying and bed & coughing up that has me zepellin” were written to give the verses 0 release. It’s meant to feel confusing, it’s meant to feel gritty and it’s meant to sound on edge. I’m just hoping it portrays all of that and more.”
Forming his musical identity during a time when very few black voices cut through a predominantly white early 00’s guitar scene, genre trailblazers like Kele Okereke and Dev Hynes galvanized him to become that inspiration for aspiring artists of his own time. Mudi channels a distinctly British tone of voice with a globally ambitious alternative sound, joining thus some of his London peers, Bakar and Master Peace, to shape the new identity of British indie for the next generation.
