German avant-garde/electronic/krautrock/psych band Zement have revealed their new single “Station to Station” accompanied by a music video.
The track is taken from their upcoming fourth album, Passange, due to be released on February 14, 2025 via Crazysane Records. Pre-order it here.
With their revolving rhythms, swirling synths and rough textures, ZEMENT seek to build an experience of music manufactory that incorporates elements of krautrock, psychedelic rock, noise rock and EDM. Rooted in the DIY/punk-scene of Würzburg (Germany) and the surrounding area, this musical project started by Christian Büdel (drums, percussion) and Philipp Hager (guitars, synths, drum-machines, effects, flutes) in 2014.
Following the success of their third album, Rohstoff (2021), which introduced psychedelic undertones into their mix, Passagen takes Zement’s exploration of sound even further. It delivers more disco, more punch, more glitter, more motorik, more lyrics and more jazz.
The record tells the story of a person embarking on a journey to discover a new self, explore new places, and envision a fresh utopia. The album’s second single, ‘Station to Station’ delves deeper into this narrative.
The band has chosen to make their messages more explicit, rather than retreating into private themes. This is the return of words and visuals that play with irony and surrealism, addressing the stereotypes that affect men’s lives and politics in the twentieth and twenty-first century. There’s a sense that something is wrong, something is off-kilter—but you can’t quite pinpoint what it is.
The storyteller yearns to leave behind their old life, even if they can’t fully escape it. You are, after all, a product of where you come from—but you can shape your own destiny, and no one should dictate your path. Accepting one’s own past, one’s own history, does not mean drowning in it; it means learning from it and using it. From “Station to Station”. Maybe that’s part of the song’s message.
The music draws inspiration from acts like LCD Soundsystem, Oneida and Animal Collective, while channeling the sounds of bands like Talking Heads and even Run DMC, all infused with Zement’s unique vibe. The result is a fresh electronic art-punk track with psychedelic undertones.
