German new wave / Italo disco /indie dance duo Das Beat have returned with their new single “Ohrwurm“.
Blending sounds of new wave, indie and techno, Das Beat’s sound is distinguished by the vocals of Eddie Rabenberger. Singing in both German and English, she brings a performative element to the project: trying on different characters via screaming, shouting, soft singing and spoken word.
The music is produced by Canadian-born Alexander Cowan, aka DJ Kirby, who is one half of Blue Hawaii as well as the mixer for Brutalismus 3000, amongst others in Berlin’s scene. Their songs are defined by dreamy atmospherics, driving synths & beats, guitars as well as a bassy pulse or “das beat”.
Eddie is a theatre actress originally from a small town in southern Germany. Together they find an alluring symbiosis – like Giorgio Moroder meets Nico, or Gina X Performance finds The Prodigy.
“Ohrwurm” takes a cue from early German new wave artists such as DAF. The lyrics are cheeky, “du bist ein ohrwurm für die augen“, translating in English to “you are an earworm for the eyes”.
