French disco-rock band Phoenix have shared their new single “Winter Solstice” and its accompanying video.
The song is taken from their seventh studio album ‘Alpha Zulu‘, set to be released on November 4th via Glassnote Records. Buy your copy here.
‘Winter Solstice’ marks Phoenix’s first song crafted between two different continents, with frontman Thomas Mars writing the track’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics to a beat sent remotely by fellow bandmates Deck d’Arcy, Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai.
The track sees Mars sing in distorted vocals atop building synths, musing on “fine jewellery” and “girls playing hula hoop”.
Commenting on the video, directors Warren Fu and and Saoli Nash share:
“We love the slow pace and painterly compositions of early cinema. The stark simplicity of orthochromatic film and analogue techniques fit the song like a glove…if songs had hands and needed gloves.”
