Manchester post punk four-piece The Maddocks have dropped their debut single “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things“.
The song was written, recorded and mixed by the band and mastered by Geoff Pesche (Yard Act, Lily Allen, Blur) at Abbey Road Studios.
UPDATE 23/01/2023: “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” is our new Single of the Week!
All born in the same Stockport hospital at the turn of the millennium, The Maddocks formed in the spring of 2022 after meeting each other at school almost a decade earlier.
Since their formation, the quartet have been working on their first release, a rousing and infectious offering in the form of ‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’, three and a half minutes of angular and jangly post-punk, that instantly brings to mind the likes of Eades, Yard Act and Sports Team, whilst avoiding the genre’s trademark cynicism in favour of something much more energetic and optimistic.
“This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” is probably the epitome of what The Maddocks represents” the band explain. “We’re always getting ourselves into mad situations and laughing about daft stuff, and that’s basically where the song name came from. George spilled a Pot Noodle on the floor during our second ever rehearsal, causing Toller to sigh in exasperation and utter the words “this is why we can’t have nice things” – we were in the process of writing the song and the phrase just stuck!”

The Maddocks are: George Edwards (lead vocals, lead guitar), Siobhán Lally (bass guitar, backing vocals), Alex Tollerfield (rhythm guitar) and Ed Gibbins (drums, backing vocals)
