Urge Unleash New Single/Video "In Tenebris"

French post punk/cold wave/post rock/goth quintet Urge have unleashed their new single “In Tenebris” and its accompanying video.

The track features on their upcoming debut album “Here/after“, set to arrive on November 15 via Icy Cold Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Made up of Adrien Broué (vocals), Simon Chaubard (guitar), Hugo Dupuis (drums), Clément Libes (bass, synth), and Mathieu Félix, Urge split between the Rose City, Paris and Copenhagen. Their members come from varied and experienced formations such as Plebeian Grandstand, BRUIT et, Rallye, M83, Orme or Kid Wise.

“Here/after” resonates as an anthem in the struggle for survival and the redemption of humanity faced with its own excesses—a steadfast flame in the abyss, that urges the quest for beauty, meaning, and tragedy even amid chaos.

Like its predecessors, “In Tenebris” does full justice to Urge’s motto. This is the “primal cry of a generation faced with the prospect of a bleak future, refusing to succumb to a destiny dictated by the blunders of the past“. The band sees it as a reflection on the disintegration of beliefs and the resulting isolation. A dark vision of a world where meaning has collapsed and survival becomes an act of defiance. Once again we’re treated to obscure guitars and a cavernous bass, while the drums play a more nuanced rhythm than usual. It’s a recipe for a haunting sonic climate.

The band have also shared the album track “Corrupted“, which is both a more noisy, dissonant single. Adrien’s voice even takes on a deeper, typically goth rock quality, a la Bauhaus and Sisters Of Mercy. The latter tells us more about the theme explored here:

Corrupted is a deep dive into the fragmentation of identity and desire, where moments of passion give way to self-destruction. The track reflects on how the pursuit of power, or love, distorts the self and what’s left in the wake of that pursuit—both individually and collectively.
