Marseille – Band of the Month [April]

Our featured band this month is Derby, UK indie / psych /jangle band Marseille.

Reminiscent of the 90’s Madchester scene and the 60’s Merseybeat with their own individual influence, Marseille are a band consisting of predominantly 18-19 year olds, creating a fusion of swaggering 90’s guitar music with the roaring, experimental sounds of Shoegaze. Formed in late 2021 the band consists of Will Brown, Joe Labram, Lennon Hall and Tom Spray.

In 2022 they released ‘Forget It All’, ‘Might As Well Be Mine,’ and ‘The Jungle’, also the Vega Rally Remix of the track and the b-side of ‘The Universe Is Yours’, all of which were received too much critical acclaim and support. They have also enjoyed performances at the famous Y-Not and Isle Of Wight Festivals. 2023 saw the release of their debut EP Freedom, featuring singles ‘Only Just Begun’ ‘Thinker’, “Lost & Found”. 

About Thinker:

“This song was initially written when I was only about 13 or 14. Joe saw potential in the song and insisted we bring it back into the light of day. I always saw the song about relationships until recently. I now see it as a song which talks about the loss of loved ones and all the things you want to say to them but can’t now they’re gone.”

Will Brown

Over the past 2 years Marseille have been releasing a strong body of work and playing killer sets across the UK gaining a cult fanbase and recognition from various media. They have also played prestigious festivals such as YNOT and Isle of Wight and in the early stages of 2023 the then 17 year olds embarked on a 10 date, sell out UK tour. They have recently played This Feeling’s “Big in 2024” Manchester.

The band will release their sophomore EP this year, they have already shared the first taste “Monkey In The Middle“.  With the swagger of The Charlatans, The Music and The Stone Roses, Thinker flirts with the absolute wall of sound from the 90’s Shoegaze era creating an absolute stomper of a piece.
