Los Angeles-based post punk/cold wave/shoegaze/dream pop band Mirror of Venus have returned with their excellent new single “Black Sky“.
Mirror of Venus are Joy Damert, Jose Espinoza, Heidi Weber, and Margot Rhodes, a Los Angeles post-punk outfit whose time together dates back a decade, to nights spent playing in a small but tightly knit scene in San Francisco’s Mission. Now transplants in Southern California, they’ve found one another again, bonding over their love of late ‘70s/early ‘80s UK post punk pioneers such as The Durutti Column, Sad Lovers & Giants, and Wire.
UPDATE 7/29/2024: “Black Sky” is our new Single of the Week!
Their self-released debut single, “Never Say Forever” (2023), is a nearly six-minute rain of spidery guitars and feverish synths. Built around an insistent, almost haunted rhythm, it’s a meditation on what we lose when we give ourselves over to social media.
Today, the band have announced their debut release, which will be out on August 22 through à La Carte Records. Coupled with “Never Say Forever,” the “Black Sky” cassingle features remixes from electronic powerhouses Auragraph and Fuedal. Pre-order it here.
“Black Sky” is a swirling dark song that blends elements of post-punk, dream-pop, and C86 to create a mesmerizing nearly 5 minute opus that transcends the listener into a dream-like state.
