Softcult Unleash New Single/Video "Shortest Fuse"

Canadian indie pop/shoegaze duo Softcult (composed of twin siblings Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn) have unleashed their new single “Shortest Fuse” via a music video.

In a statement, they said of new track: “Capitalism seems to be designed to keep underprivileged people toiling in a never ending cycle of debt and poverty where their labor is underpaid in order to profit their employers. The benefits of capitalism are rarely equally distributed, accruing wealth to a very small percentage of the population. Built on the notion of greed, benefitting only by paying workers less than what their labor is worth, it’s difficult to not become disenfranchised with capitalism when you exist in this reality and see no end in sight. We can’t become complicit in a system that is designed to keep us down.”

The song is out now via Easy Life Records. Grab it here and watch the Mercedes Arn-Horn-directed video below.

Softcult “Shortest Fuse” Lyrics:

Yeah your boss forgot the payroll again
He’s such a capitalist
Don’t even know what we spent it on
Now you’re selling your guitar to pay rent

I’m all over you
You’re not in the mood
Just playing it cool
Drawing straws for the shortest fuse

Held my hand over the stove
Wanted to feel in control
Some people learn from mistakes
But i just repeat mine over again
To see if something changes

It’s so degrading

I’m all over you
You’re not in the mood
Just playing it cool
Drawing straws for the shortest fuse

Take what you can get
Remain apathetic
Never stick your neck out of line
Live paycheque to paycheque
Be safe and complacent
Is this what you call “free enterprise?”
A slave to the man until we die
We do what we can to feel alive

I’m all over you
You’re not in the mood
Just playing it cool
Drawing straws for the shortest fuse
