L'objectif - Band of the Month (March)
L’objectif – Band of the Month

Our featured band this month is Leeds indie rock band L’objectif.

Formed in 2017, L’objectif is made up of schoolmates with a desire to forge music their own way. Frontman Saul Kane first formed a group with drummer Louis Bullock, aged 12. Bassist Ezra Glennon and guitarist Dan Richardson joined the band in 2020.

With each member picking up instruments as children, the young friends have a shared love of genres and musicians that belies their tender age: jazz funk, hip-hop, punk, post-punk, and almost everything in between. Also inspired by painters Basquiat and Francis Bacon, L’objectif seek excitement in the intellectually stimulating and subjective; finding thrill in the confusion.

The band released their official debut single “Drive In Mind” in March 2020.

Their following single “Burn Me Out“, came out as the first taste of their debut EP Have It Your Way, released on 20 July 2021, through Chess Club Records and Mirror Music Group.

In February 2022 they released the track “Same Thing“, which was featured as Single of the Week here on Kool Rock Radio.

“The song itself is quite simplistic – I wanted to write something people can sing and dance to. The lyrics aren’t too complex either, but the subject matter can go as deep as you want it. For me, it’s about the introspective aspect of relationships with people and the connotations and worries we attach to different situations that are completely unhealthy and made up in our heads. It’s not a song telling someone nicely to stop overthinking; it’s telling your thoughts to shut up. At first I thought the lyrics were about someone else but it’s most likely a message to myself.”

The track was also included on their sophomore EP ‘We Aren’t Getting Out but Tonight We Might‘, released on July 29 through Chess Club Records. On 20 September 2023, the band returned with the single “ITSA”, produced by Kane and Ali Chant (Yard Act, Dry Cleaning).

New EP ‘The Left Side’

Earlier this year the quartet announced the release of their third EP ‘The Left Side‘, which will be out this month (March 22) through Chess Club Records, including previously unveiled singles “ITSA“, “entitled“, “Puppy“, and their newest track Lily Of The Valley (also featured as Single of the Week).

Written in Saul’s bedroom, the EP is a retrospective insight into the young band’s journey so far as they tie up their teenage years. A coming of age saga, the EP acts as a vehicle for Saul to dive into the psyche behind emotional evolution, and to unpack the complexities of maturity and the ability to say goodbye to the past. These themes present themselves not only in the songs, but right down to the title of the EP itself – which refers to the fact that the left side of the brain is responsible for comprehension.

Speaking about the EP, Saul says:

“It’s the closest we have been to knowing what picture we want to paint. It’s another window into the musical space we wish to explore, yet I think we’re closer to having our sound. I think the project signifies the end of a section in our lives, moving out from the haze of the moment and reflecting on our teenage years and all its chaos with more understanding.”
